In January 2011, Maryland Morning with Sheilah Kast senior producer Lawrence Lanahan interviewed some people waiting in line at the "North Baltimore Career Expo" at Baltimore City Community College's Liberty Heights campus. 

He met 36-year-old Gerard Spady, who had been laid off from a construction job three years ealier, at the beginning of the financial crisis. Spady talked about why he would love to find a job bricklaying. 

The Baltimore Business Journal reported that 300 construction jobs were lost in the greater Baltimore area between August 2010 and August 2011.
